Can We Keep The Sexual Desire Alive in a Long-Term Relationship?

Eating the cake and keeping it whole. It's the longest paradox of humanity. Either the sex life is good and nothing else works, or everything else works and then the sexuality gradually goes away. When couples come to me for an astrology reading, they expect me to make them feel good about it, like everyone else does. But being a tantric astrologer, I have a different opinion.
The couples who made peace with reality
There is a sentence I hear more than almost any other in relationship readings. "Our relationship is so good. We're like the A-Team. We're best friends."
It comes out warm and it comes out proud, and then, usually a minute later, comes the other half. The desire is completely gone. But it's fine, it's just life...
The part that bothers me is not the loss. It is how calmly people report it. Most couples have already filed it as inevitable, the tax you pay for a long relationship, the thing everyone jokes about at a certain age. They arrive not to fix it but to be told it is normal. And it is common. Common and inevitable are not the same word.
It is also nobody's fault. Nobody stopped trying. Nobody got lazy. In almost every case I read, the desire disappeared as a direct result of the couple doing "everything right".
Desire runs on difference
Here is the law underneath it, and it is not a relationship law. It is a law of energy.
Nothing moves between two things that are identical. Current runs between a positive pole and a negative one. Heat travels from hot to cold. Wind exists because one part of the sky is under more pressure than another. Take away the difference and you have not created harmony, you have created stillness. The system is at rest because there is nowhere left for anything to go. Entropy has reached its maximum.
Sexual attraction obeys the same rule. Desire is not a feeling that lives inside one person and gets aimed at another. It is what happens in the space between two poles that have not become the same thing. Fire and water. Masculine and feminine, which in this context are not men and women but two functions, and both of you carry both. One reaches. One receives. One initiates, one draws in. The names matter less than the fact that there are two of them, and that they are held by two people who have stayed distinguishable.
That is why the answer to a dead bedroom is almost never more closeness. Closeness is what removed the gap.
A "good" relationship closes the gap on purpose
Watch what a loving long-term relationship actually does over ten years.
You start finishing each other's sentences. You take on the same worries, in the same order, at the same hour of the night. Your opinions converge. Your schedules fuse. You develop a shared position on the neighbours, the in-laws, the money. You stop introducing yourself to each other because there is nothing left to introduce. But that's a lie. Can you truly say you have seen the full depth of that person? Everything they could still become? Usually not...
Now, this is beautiful. I want to be clear that I mean that. It is the thing people spend their whole lives hoping to build, and if you have it, you have something rare. In the good case it feels like a home you can finally stop performing inside. In the bad case, the same process leaves you as two roommates running a shared calendar with real affection and no current in it.
Either way, the mechanism is the same. You merged. And a partner you have completely understood is a partner you stop reaching for.
Where the polarity lives in your chart
In the chart, every part of our daily life has a location. Relationships live in the seventh house, along with whatever sign sits on it and whatever planets are occupying or contacting it. That is the field. It is wide, and it holds more than one conversation at once.
Inside that field, the Moon carries the first definition of love, the conditions under which you were originally loved, recorded not as one example of love but as the definition of it. That is a whole subject and I have written about it elsewhere.
For sexual and erotic desire and creativity specifically, I am reading a narrower axis inside the wider field: Venus and Mars.
Venus is the feminine erotic pole of human beings. Venus represents beauty, aesthetics, attraction, seduction, comfort, softness, intimacy. In a woman's chart Venus represents a very unique source of feminine attractiveness. In a man's chart Venus represents the specific type of feminine energy that actually turns him on.
Mars, on the contrary, is the masculine erotic pole. It represents action, dynamism, assertiveness. Competitiveness. Roughness. The ability to face adversity in the name of attaining goals. In a man's chart Mars represents his core competence and what kind of a warrior he is inside. The source of his main practices. In the woman's chart, Mars represents the specific masculine energy that actually turns her on.
Venus closes distance. Mars needs distance to work with. The erotic charge in a relationship sits exactly on the tension between those two, in both charts at once. This is the kind of structural read a personal reading gives you before you bring a second person into it, because half of what happens between you is your own polarity, not the couple's.
How the collapse shows up in a reading
Here is how the detection actually runs, in the order it runs.
Somebody tells me the friendship is excellent and the desire is gone, and then adds, almost as a boast, that they never fight. That last detail is the one I stop on. Not the desire, the absence of conflict.
Because Mars is one function with two names. The part of you that objects and the part of you that wants are the same instrument. A couple who have not had a real objection in two years have not achieved peace, they have put Mars down. Once I hear that, I go to Mars in both charts, and then I look at what it is doing instead. It is almost always somewhere. Spent entirely at work. Turned inward as low-grade irritation with nothing to aim at. Aimed at the children's school. Sitting in the gym.
Then I look at Venus, which is "thriving" but not really. Two people, endlessly accommodating, endlessly attuned, each one softening before the other has to ask. Nobody is holding a pole. Nobody has anything to reach across. The desire part, the sensual dynamism part, is completely pushed away.
That is not a broken chart. That is two charts that have been played beautifully in one direction for a decade.
Two ends of the same problem
I am going to give you two opposite pictures, and before I do, I want to say plainly that these are examples, not categories. Your chart may not sit at either end, and most do not.
At one end, the merge. There is no distance left at all. Separateness produces guilt: an evening out alone feels like something taken from the other person, so you stop taking it. Love came to be understood as togetherness with no gap in it, and the relationship has delivered exactly that. The medicine here is separation, and it will feel wrong for a while.
At the other end, distance without a field. Two people running parallel lives, polite, uncoupled, no charge between them. This looks superficially like the answer to the first one and it is not, because polarity needs contact to arc across. The medicine here is the reverse: exposure, presence, actually showing each other what is happening inside.
Hand either of those the other one's medicine and you make it worse. That is the whole reason I refuse to give anyone a table to find themselves in. There are plenty of other configurations. One of you merged while the other quietly withdrew. A polarity that flipped years ago, when one of you took over the earning or the parenting, and never got renegotiated out loud. A couple whose charge is completely intact and whose Mars is being spent down to zero somewhere else. The principle underneath all of them is the same and it is the only thing worth carrying: the question is never which type you are. It is which direction the charge needs to move, and that is a reading, not a category.
It's not just about scheduling more dates
So the work is not to schedule intimacy. Scheduling is administration applied to a structural problem.
It is also not to manufacture mystery. Withholding, going quiet, playing hard to get: those are tactics, they are dishonest, and your partner will read them within a week. Tactics do not build a pole. They perform one.
The real practice is to become a full, separate person again, so that there is someone there to reach for, while still managing your household.
In concrete terms, that means having a life your partner is not inside of. Something you do that they do not watch. A skill you are building where they are not the audience. A body of work, a practice, a room of your own, friendships that are yours. It means coming home with something they did not help you make, and having your own opinion about something before you check theirs. It means letting them see you be competent at something outside the house, which is one of the most underrated erotic acts available to a long-term couple. And the secret ingredient is to make sure that each one of you is doing so while connecting to the feminine and masculine whole again, respectively.
And it means stopping the constant management of each other's moods. That reflex feels like devotion. What it actually does is remove the last bit of unpredictability between you.
Notice what is not on that list. Less love. Less kindness. Less commitment. You are not reducing anything. You are adding back the second pole. In every reading I do, of any placement, the goal is never to amputate the strong part of somebody. It is to develop the part that has been sitting in the shadow while the strong part did all the work.
Why the tantric view will not let this go
Most approaches treat desire as a nice extra. Have it if you can, and if you cannot, at least you have love, companionship, a good team.
I do not accept that trade, and neither does the tradition I teach from. In the tantric view a full life has to serve all of it: your prosperity, your desire, your purpose, and your liberation. Those are not four separate departments where three out of four is a decent score. A relationship that has quietly deleted one of them is not peaceful. It is missing a limb and has learned to walk without it.
Desire is not the opposite of devotion. It is the fuel that devotion runs on. A partner who is your best friend, your soulmate, and someone you still want is not a fantasy standard. It is the actual design.
You don't reignite desire by getting closer. You reignite it by becoming two again.
What two charts give you
Read together, your chart and your partner's show which pole each of you naturally carries, which one you took on early because somebody had to, where the merge happened, and what has been holding the missing charge in the meantime. It gives you the direction to move, and it gives you the specific practice for your structure rather than generic advice about date nights.
A relationship reading is where I do that work with both charts open. If you want to see what your polarity actually looks like, and what the two of you have quietly agreed to stop doing, that is what the session is for.
